UK online centres - Partner news

Helen Milner

Last week, I visited a wonderful centre in Cambridge with the chairman of our board, Lord Knight of Weymouth. Jim will be playing a really important role connecting what you’re doing in your community with the national picture, so it was great for him to see all the fantastic work that Andrew Entecott and the whole team at Cambridge Online are doing. I know Jim was very impressed so I’d like to say thank you to Andrew and everyone who made us feel so welcome.

And if you missed it amongst ND2012 and the jubilee, we launched a brand new course to help your learners manage their money better. It's called Make Money Work and you can take a look at it on our learning website. There was some really interesting talk about the links between financial and digital exclusion at ND2012, which I've been blogging about, so do take a look at it.

Best wishes

Helen Milner

Chief Executive

Vote for Helen!

Last week we were very excited to find out that our very own Chief Executive Helen Milner has been shortlisted to be in the British Interactive Media Awards’ Digital Hall of Fame.

Helen has been instrumental in everything UK online centres has achieved over the last few years so we’re really proud that she’s been nominated. Only 20 out of the 50 individuals nominated will make it into the Hall of Fame however, so Helen needs your vote! Why not head over to the awards website and cast your ballot today?

Our new community development website

Last week we told you about an exciting and ambitious new community development website we’ve got in the works. The site will be a great one-stop shop for anyone looking for resources to support their community project and we want your tips!

We had some great responses from centres who have found certain online tools really useful but we’d love to hear from more of you, especially if you’ve used any of the below websites:

If you’re a fan of these sites or any other online tool, please do get in touch by emailing help@ukonlinecentres.com.

Spotlight on...

This week we’re shining our spotlight on The Green Man Community Centre in East Finchley, London.

Based on the Strawberry Vale estate, the centre provides a wide range of facilities and services for the local community. They’ve done some fantastic work, with one of their team having gone on to use Facebook and other social media to set up a charity tackling hate crime, being invited to Downing Street and chosen as an Olympic torchbearer in the process!

You can read more about this great centre here.

Olympic torch relay - is it passing you?

With the Olympic torch currently zig-zagging its way across the country to London for the opening ceremony on July 27, we want to know if its passing your centre or even if you know one of the torchbearers!

Do post your stories and photos on Twitter or on our Facebook page. You can see the route the torch is taking here and check out coverage of its journey so far here.

We’re also developing a toolkit to help you use the games to help people make the most of the internet. We’ll be launching this soon, so do keep an eye out!
