UK online centres - Partner news

29 November 2011

Helen Milner

It’s a really exciting week for UK online centres as the Online Centres Foundation team takes over the management of the service from Ufi Ltd. This marks a really exciting time for us, and we’ll continue to work closely with you. We’ll be able to share details of our new strategy soon, so do keep an eye out.

Don’t forget, this will mean our email addresses have changed. The main one you’ll need to remember is help@ukonlinecentres.com which is replacing ukonlinecentres@ufi.com. You can still reach any other members of the team and they’ll be able to tell you what their new address is.

Last week I was lucky enough to attend the TalkTalk Digital Heroes awards 2011. It was inspiring to hear about so many successful projects that are using technology to make a real difference to people’s lives, and I was so pleased that two of the winners of the regional awards are from registered UK online partner centres! Many congratulations to all the winners, they set a fantastic example. You can read more about the Digital Heroes from UK online centres below.

Best wishes

Our next campaign - New Year, new online you!

We’re very excited to confirm the details of our next marketing campaign which will run from 23 January until the 17 February 2012 and aims to inspire people to access government services online.

‘New Year, new online you' will focus on three online services - Jobseeker’s allowance (JSA) online, pension information and NHS Choices.

If you’d like to take part all you need to do is register, and run sessions, activities and events focused on jobs, pensions and health (as well as any other things you choose) during the campaign period!

Marketing packs will be available and will include posters, leaflets, badges and lots more. Packs will be delivered in early January and centres holding events will be flagged on our centre search.

The registration form will be available very soon, do keep checking our website for updates.

TalkTalk Digital Heroes at UK online centres

We were very pleased and proud to see that two of this year’s regional winners of TalkTalk’s Digital Heroes awards have gone to staff or volunteers from registered UK online centres.

Dave Wooldridge, manager of The Lighthouse, a homeless hostel in Scunthorpe is the winner for the Yorkshire and Humber region and hopes to use the prize money to update the equipment and develop the training provision of their Life Skills Centre.

Jean Raby who works for Age UK Darlington, won for the North East region and their prize will be used to improve their technical capabilities and help recruit more volunteers.

Many congratulations to Dave and Jean, the awards are thoroughly deserved and we’ll be posting more details about their projects and the great work they’re doing on our website later in the week.

Give an hour for Christmas

After the success of Give an hour, UK online centre will be supporting Race online 2012’s festive campaign, Give an hour for Christmas.

The campaign will be encouraging as many people as possible to pledge an hour of their time over the holiday season, helping someone they know get online for the first time.

Whether it’s helping them send an e-Christmas card to relatives abroad or showing them all the Christmas shopping bargains they can find online, there are loads of ways to help!

There’s lots of information about helping someone get online for the first time on the Digital Champions’ website and there will be some great campaign resources available a little closer to the time.

See IT in Action

Would you like to find out how information technology is transforming the delivery of public services and improving lives?

The second ‘See IT in Action’ conference will take place on 21 February 2012 in East London, and will provide a great opportunity to see how technology can achieve real social, economic and organisational improvements.

It will also demonstrate how local government is working to improve the delivery of public services and meet the government's pledge to make all services ‘digital by default’.

You can find more information and reserve your place on the conference website here.
