Notes [reverse chronological order]

Further Notes from Paul Brow 06/10/15 ..........

Mel,
This video is great at explaining digital audio and explodes a few myths.
http://xiph.org/video/vid2.shtml  (new window)
I saw it last year and it explained a few nagging issues I had.  It’s presented well too.
In subsequent audio tests I also proved that people are irrational and more eagerly believe myths than proper science.  Paul B. ..........

A great illusions/electronics video…

(new window) ..... TV & film wouldn’t work if we didn’t have this ‘skill’.  Paul B.

(new window) ...  This YouTube channel is well worth subscribing to – there’s loads of really interesting videos .......  It will keep you occupied for weeks!  Paul B.

Notes from Mel Ashton ...........

Paul, Ian & I had a great time visiting you at your house - excellent presentation of all your facilities, including remote control model helicopters, remote control garden features, Dinky Toys and other models and much, much, more - and, as Ian recalled, the exploding cigarette exploded ON HIS WAY HOME from college to Outwood, Wakefield !!

Notes from Paul Conway ..........

Wow! These are amazing. Top marks for those who thought to take all of these photos.
[Paul Brow - Senior Technician who also 'lived' between F3/F4 much of his time!  Mel]

Unfortunately there don't seem to be any of me but my time was a little earlier. I started at Kitson around 1966 and left to go to University in 1969 - graduating in 1973 - although I did return part-time to teach on the Radio & TV courses in about 1980.
Many happy memories though and so wonderful to meet up again after 45 years!!!! Phew.
Even more amazingly, I did the full circle and after early retirement from Leeds Met, ended up only two years ago back at Kitson (Now called Leeds City College) teaching Communication Electronics and Electronic Systems Design part-time on the BEng(Hons) Electronic and Electrical Engineering Degree. I finally pulled the plug though this year. After all, no point in retiring and then teaching more in retirement that I did as a full time lecturer at Leeds Met!
It seemed so strange though eating in the refrec and using the same lift that I used 45 years ago!!!!
Best regards to all,
Paul Conway

Further Notes from Paul Brow ..........

Mel,
Refurb was done mid 90’s because they thought more space could be gained,
more bums on seats.
I designed the layout, furniture, TV lab and the in-house build team did most of the work with contractors for flooring.
Asbestos was removed from F1 some years before but I don’t remember how it was dealt with in other rooms.
E floor electronics was moved up to F floor.
E floor became computer maintenance and basic teaching rooms.
The whole building is now computer suites and social care training with video/audio still on N floor.
Chemistry, Biology, Mech Eng, Electrical Eng, Electronics Eng, BT Eng – ALL GONE!
Yeah, it was a great team in the era of yourself, Frank, Stuart Craig, Sukhdev Singh, Ian Lindley, Peter Courtney etc.
I felt we were doing ‘proper’ engineering and training. Good times for sure.
BBC Micro to 286 PC – radical!
We had some great years, good laughs, ‘magic’ moments, I learned a great deal too from you guys.
I wonder if Ian remembers me putting those bangers in his cigs!? He was a good sport but probably hated it.

I'll ask him but he spends a lot of time at Susan's daughter's places in Spain

Initial Notes from Paul Brow ..........

Ian Sykes ended up more in management but with his maths & theory skills was wasted.
There was a tallish bloke with a beard, quiet chap, that mainly did evenings, he left and worked for many years at Leeds Uni.
Anyone know ?  - let Mel know
Who was the guy who ran his own video repair company but did evening teaching?
Anyone know ?  - let Mel know
I’ll try to rack my brains for more names.
It was ok after the refurb but we started getting some ‘ineffective personalities’ in calling themselves lecturers and when Richard & I left in late 1998 it deteriorated rapidly in the years after.
Now we are in a politically correct era with little real production or engineering ....
It’s hard to predict where it will end up!
Cheers, Paul Brow
Paul, many thanks for pictures & info [Mel]
