Hello Mel,

I was looking at your Isherwood's page on the net ......

From time to time I write articles for the local nostalgia magazine 'Memories of Barnsley', particularly on the subject of vanished industries. I am currently writing a more general article on the Oakwell area of my childhood. I lived at the bottom of Windermere Road as a child and I remember Isherwoods.

I was going to ask you if you had any photos of the tube reconditioning works on Windermere, for my current article, but having seen your notes on the web I am beginning to think that Isherwoods could have an article all to itself, with just a mention in the current (general) article. This would depend on whether or not any photos of the works were available. I have some recent photos of the outside (a brick wall!) but these are not terribly informative.

Do you have any photos of the interior or exterior of the Barnsley works?
If so, would you be willing to allow me to use them in an article about Isherwoods.

Many thanks

Andrew Taylor

Thank you for your kind comments Andrew,

I started work with Alwyn Isherwood Ltd. (at the Service department, 62 George Street Wakefield), as an indentured RTRA apprentice in September, 1955 at 15 years of age - having left school at 14 years of age !

I have VERY FOND MEMORIES of my eight years with the firm, gaining full City and Guilds Television Service by the age of 20.
During this period, at 19 years of age, I was elected to be responsible for the operation of Alwyn Isherwood (Electronics) Ltd. on Windermere Road, Barnsley.  I was assisted by the VERY CAPABLE 'David Inman' and we reconditioned monochrome television cathode ray tubes - no colour television in 1959 !

Following a 'Telematics' course, at Wakefield Technical College, I used my project 'A Tribute to Alwyn Isherwood' as an exercise in basic website design.  The website is 'ancient' in terms of current designs but it seems to work ok - you are currently viewing a page !!).

I would be absolutely delighted if this is of use to you for any purpose you may require and you have my permission to use ANY text and pictures from this website, however I would prefer you to notify me of any such use.

Best Regards,
