HAPTON was the first village in England to have street lighting by electricity.
The system was installed by Simpson Brothers in 1886 and was operated by them until 1926.

Founded in 1886 by Messrs W.F. and J.F. Simpson (the former a pupil of Edison), the firm, Simpson Brothers (of Hapton) Ltd. was responsible for a great deal of pioneer work, in the electrical sphere, in Lancashire.  (Lamp & Plaque erected by Hapton Parish Council in 1999).  Click Here for Generator Picture.
