In 1979 Brian Griffiths of Beeston (Nottingham) fell from the top of the bridge down onto the towpath.
It was 'pitch black' - not even any stars - and we were 'feeling our way' to the footpath.
Brian thought he had located the path, but had merely passed through the small gap
between the safety barrier / bollard and the bridge wall - see top right of bridge !
Though he was 'unconscious' for a while, he had fortunately only broken his thumb.
The moral is - ALWAYS CARRY a TORCH !!

Sadly, Brian passed away on Tuesday 20th May, 2003 following MANY years suffering
from 'Huntington's Disease' -  condolences are expressed for his wife, Shiela and their
daughter Tina, and her husband Jason.  Tina is expecting her first baby on 1st September, 2003  and though Tina has been tested positive for the disease, the (unborn) baby tests have shown the baby to be clear.
(Mel July, 2003)

Regrettably, Tina's condition has deteriorated - she is now separated from Jason and is in a care home near to Mum Sheila.
