Facebook Milestone
West Yorkshire Police Celebrate Facebook Milestone
Wednesday, September 29, 2010
West Yorkshire Police Web Team are celebrating today after reaching the
5000 Fans milestone on Social Networking site Facebook.
West Yorkshire Police were one of the very first UK Police forces to
embrace Facebook as a tool for interacting with the general public and
from very early on could see that embracing Social Networking tools was
a useful way of keeping in touch with local residents.
The Facebook pages have grown over the years from providing short
regular updates, to now offering news, appeals, press releases, Caught
on Camera wanted images and more recently a 'tab' taking users direct to
the new Online Crime Reporting tool. The Facebook page is soon to
feature a brand new online photo gallery showing West Yorkshire Police
vehicles through the years.
The Force has a main Forcewide Facebook page which now has over 5000
fans, but is also rolling out more localised Facebook pages for it's
Neighbourhood Policing Teams. Please keep an eye out for these in the
future - links to these will feature on the NPT website

David Bell, Web Communications Co-ordinator said "Social Networking
sites are fantastic tools for us to reach audiences that might not
normally visit our website. It makes sense to have our information fed
direct onto Facebook and onto our fan's own Facebook 'Walls' - so we
provide our information direct to our fan's own online spaces - rather
than relying on them coming to our website.
"Facebook is also increasingly being used as a way of receiving public
feedback and concerns - the feedback system allows members of the public
to comment on our updates and have direct interaction with the force.
Any feedback is circulated back to the police teams involved in the
story to help them make improvements.
"As technology advances we're also aware that Facebook and other Social
Media tools are becoming more and more popular on mobile devices, and we
find Facebook on Smartphones an ideal way to communicate with people
while they're on the move".
