Hi Reece, Sorry for not being in touch regarding some help with your
computer, (or other), work
I am still made up with cold so cannot meet you - I think it's that
swine / pig flu thingy .....
I'm coming out in 'rashers' and have
'crackling' in my ears'
(jokes).
Anyway, to make a start:
WE MUST sort out your Mums email problems - if she will let me run a
remote access program on her computer I will try to sort it for you.
I will ask her / your granddad for permission. If permission is
given I will explain how you can set it up - free of charge for 30 days.
I suggest that you make list(s) of what you would like help with,
then re-write them in order of priority and send them from your
granddad's until we get your Mum's emails working. You will
probably be better using a 'WORD' document for this and then attach it
to an email to me from your granddads.
Some important things to start with are given below, together with
further stages if you are ok with the first ones..
Some things for you to start with are given below.
1) Emails - set up extra boxes, signatures, etc. in 'Outlook
Express'.
2) Web browsing - setting your Home Page, opening additional windows,
etc.
What version of 'Internet Explorer' are you using and
are you using Windows XP or Vista ?
Useful Microsoft Programs are:
3) WORD (Letters, etc).
4) Excel (Calculations, bank statements etc - we could set up simple
exercise sheets)
5) Access (Databases - use for your family & friends)
6) Front Page (for web site development)
Help from my

Once we get going, I'll re-publish these tutorials on separate pages
with an Index Page.

Email Setup If you are having problems
it MAY Be that your Sky mailboxes are full ?
Follow the first SIX steps of
Email
Set Up.
I prefer to set the webmail such that emails are deleted
once 'taken' by Outlook Express.
There is a facility for setting this option the webmail
settings.
Choose the 'Enable Pop for all mail' option (not the 'from
now on' option.
When emails are accessed by
POP (Post Office Protocol):
Think of the 'Server' mail section, Sky in your case), as
your Post Office - ALL your mail comes into and goes out
from THERE (NOT Outlook
Express).
Now think of 'Outlook
Express' as your postman - delivering mail FROM the Server
Inbox to your Outlook Express Inbox. And sending mail
from your 'Outlook Express Outbox' to the Server Outbox
where it is then 'posted' to the desired recipient.
When the Sever Mail section,
(Post Office), delivers mail to your Inbox (Outlook
Express), it has TWO options:
1) Deliver a COPY to Outlook Express (mailings are then
available from elsewhere but ...
The mailbox capacity may EASILY be exceeded - especially if
files have large
attachments.
2) Deliver the mail and NOT
keep a copy - I prefer to use THIS option as it prevents
your Server Inbox capacity being exceeded.
If your mailbox is NOT full
.......
Check out
the Outlook Express
Email
Set Up procedure (for Sky).
The procedure must be followed
PRECISELY
- print out the instructions then tick them off as you proceed. If you have
already set Outlook express up, open it, (don't open any
emails), click on 'Tools' then 'Accounts' - you should only
have ONE account. If you have more, highlight the
wrong ones and use the 'Remove' button to delete them.
Now highlight your account - it should be a 'mail (default)'
account.
Note: use your Mums SKY email
address - don't use your own.
reece@reecekenny.co.uk is currently diverted to your
granddad's email address but, when you Mum's is working
correctly, I'll set up your emails to come directly to your
Mums email address - possibly with a copy to your granddads
so that you can work from home OR your granddads.
Further exercises when your
emails are working ok. |

Windows Explorer - use for
exploring files & folders in your computer.
Create some test folders and put some files in them, then
drag / drop / delete files from these TEST folders - PLEASE
don't delete files from other folders !
Many other programs use 'windows based techniques' so good
practice in this is essential. Try setting up a
'Tutorial' folder and put your WORD documents in there
relating to your help requirements and for your work on the
topics. You could set up at least two sub-folders -
one for 'Requested Help' and one for 'Work Completed' -
perhaps another sub folder for 'Problems to deal with'. |

Web Browsing - Try to create a
'Site Map' for YOUR website: See if you can find out how
many 'Internal' pages there are in your website - some are
in the 'root' folder and some are in other folders so you
will have to write down pages in the 'root folder' first,
then pages in other folders - I'll leave it to you to sort
out how many folders, (directories), there are in YOUR pages
but .....
Regarding YOUR website:
Though I have now made it like a
single website - it is actually stored in MY web space so, to
try and answer the above questions, you will be better
starting in:
www.melashton.co.uk/reece/tutorials which is YOUR root
folder.
You used ONE of your folders, (directories), called
'tutorials' to get THIS
page so that's a start ! |
