Telephone Scam

Copy of email received Friday 10th December, 2010

Dear Coordinators

Last week I was notified about a possible postal scam involving a company called UK Allocations Office. It told the recipient that they were eligible for a prize and provided a telephone number to call which would cost £1.50 per minute from a BT landline.

I immediately contacted Trading Standards and today I have been informed of the following:

Trading Standards have no specific information about UK Allocations Office but they do have an investigation ongoing into 500 complaints for several companies trading from the same  postcode.

During the conversation I was informed about the Think Jessica Campaign and below is an snippet of information on the campaign from the Trading Standards website.

I was also asked to advise anyone who receives similar correspondence to report the matter to Trading Standards on 08454 04 05 06 and not to contact the company involved to try and claim a fictitious prize.

Think Jessica Campaign

Postal scams are a silent threat to many vulnerable and older adults across the UK. Scam mail is a terrible interference in people’s lives and there is no means of preventing the mail from reaching targeted households.  Those that perpetrate this crime often operate from outside the UK and cheat thousands of UK citizens out of their money.

Think Jessica aims to raise awareness of the dangers of scam mail, provide support to those who need help and push the government to create new legislation to protect those chronic victims who suffer from social isolation and declining mental health.

The Think Jessica campaign launched a national poster campaign on 1 October 2009 and Trading Standards support this campaign. The aim of the poster is to raise awareness of postal scams; advising people to think before sending money to claim fake prizes from bogus lotteries, competitions and catalogues. It is designed to appeal to the families of victims / potential victims and directly to victims themselves so that they recognise that what they are doing is responding to a scam.

Please see the poster below and if you need any further information please call 0800 848 88 55 or view the website -
