FAMILY TRADITION:
Rhubarb grower Geoff Kellett surveys the damage after the fire

Family's misery after sheds arson

Geoff Kellett's livelihood has gone up in smoke in a fire which destroyed three
generations of hard work by his family.

A second fire in two weeks destroyed rhubarb forcing sheds leaving Geoff and his sister, Joyce,  devastated.

Police  are appealing for witnesses to the blaze which is being treated as suspicious.

The Kellett family have grown rhubarb on the site at Lawns Lane, Carr Gate, near
Wakefield, for over 100 years.

Geoff, 57, who lives on the site with his sister, was woken by a neighbour just after 6 am yesterday to find his family tradition brought to a tragic end.

"That was my total income and livelihood - it wasn't rich but it was comfortable and I was used to it" he said.  "I was born here and my mother was born here.  My grandfather and then my uncle grew rhubarb and it was passed to me.   It will be no good to put rhubarb on that site now."

The first fire was two weeks ago, and police say there are also treating this as suspicious.  Detective inspector Steve Palmer, of Wakefield CID, said:  "There's no rhubarb production at the moment, but the sheds are damaged and the cost is looking to run into thousands of pounds."
