The Staff Barracks later known as Saint Patrick Buildings in
Boherbee were built about 1868. These were the married quarters for the
permanent staff of the Barracks, such as depot instructions. Other
British Regiments that served in Ballymullen included the Cheshire
Regiment (I822) 2nd Battalion Welsh Regiment (1874) the Lincoinshire
Regiment, The Royal Inniskillings, the 2nd Battalion South Staffordshire
Regiment, and Royal Marines. A former Depot Commander, Major P. Charrier
R.M.F. who served in Ballymullen Barracks in 1912/13, was killed in
action when in command of the 2nd Battalion R.M.F. during, the retreat
from Mons in 1914. The scene of this action is marked by a Celtic Cross
n the village of Etreux. During the Great War, Ballymullen became a rest
barracks for various battalions who came to rest and regroup. Many extra
huts were built at this time to accommodate the extra numbers. Click Here for a printer friendly version of this page [new window] |
